The inner journey, that is. Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a 46 day stretch when we are encouraged to spend time in stillness, perhaps do some fasting, and ‘indulge’ in charitable works all with the specific purpose of ridding ourselves of the ways that keep us away from God.
Wiser folk have suggested that if we do not have time for half and hour of stillness, than we need a full hour. Now is the time to heed this advice so we can stop using incredible amounts of energy swimming against a very strong current by following our egos and surrender to something much greater than ourselves. Ironically, when we do, we find a sense of ease with ourselves that makes us not care so much what people think. Of course, this is easier said than done, that is why we need to ‘spend time in the desert’, so to speak.
For me, I am not sure what I need to let go of. What anchors do I no longer need? This is the first day of my journey in that desert that will bring me to the other side, hopefully, feeling much lighter.
For the next 46 days, I will fast a bit, pray and give in ways I do not normally, all in the hopes that I can align myself with the mover of all things. How good is that?
Let the journey begin.
TRY THIS: Take time to nurture your spiritual life. Just like going to the gym to make your body strong, spending time in stillness will fortify every part of you.
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
